A number of Senior MPs have been asked to ensure that the UK Government is forced to face a vote of no confidence, due to a failure to act to protect the right to life of millions of school children. This after an ongoing failure as both an opposition party and now in Government, to investigate an alleged cover up of failings in the Department for Education (DfE) that may have resulted in the harm and deaths of numerous children in relation to bullying, physical and sexual violence in UK schools and which continue to leave millions of children at further risk of harm.
To be clear, the allegations of a Government cover up are not in relation to any failings that may have occurred or may be occurring in schools, that is a separate matter. The allegations relate to a cover up of failings within Government and specifically within the DfE itself.
High Court and Court of appeal Judges have accepted that the allegations were never investigated by the last Government, while the current Labour Government have failed to investigate, despite numerous requests to do so, firstly in their role as the official Opposition and now as the presiding Government. With the Mainstream Media potentially persuaded not to cover the story because of the damage it would do, successive politicians have seemed confident that no matter how badly they fail, they’ll never be publicly held to account. The failure to investigate, likely represents a number of clear human rights violations, potential criminal negligence and misconduct, which has led to concerns being raised by the European Commission’s Head of Human Rights and now a review of the evidence by the United Nations.
The failure to investigate on the face of the evidence represents at the very least “tremendous incompetence” in the view of one High Court Judge, while Alex Easton the Independent MP for North Down in N. Ireland has said in an email to the Prime Minister, which you can read here that the evidence is substantial regarding failure and the risk of further harm.
That evidence and more has now been made available to twelve party leaders in the House of Commons including the Official Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch. What should follow is a test of the confidence of MPs in a Government, that on the facts, has failed so demonstrably to take any steps whatsoever to investigate, in order to protect millions of school children from further harm. As a consequence, all party leaders have been sent a letter requesting that they table a motion of no confidence in the current Government at the earliest opportunity. This will give them the chance to debate the issue and determine if in fact the Government does retain the confidence of the House or not. you can read the letter to the LOTO here
The general rule is the Government should agree to a request from the Leader of the Opposition to debate a motion of confidence in the Government. Come the New Year, the nation will therefore be depending on Kemi Badenoch to put forward this motion, that will at the very least ensure that subsequently, necessary steps to prevent further harm and loss of life will be taken. If Kemi Badenoch, or any other Party leader fails to do so, in light of all of the evidence available, given the nature of the failings and the support for transparency and accountability from both home and abroad including from the UN, then she primarily and others must provide very good reasons to millions of families across the UK for their decision.
All leaders should bear in mind that should the Government have any available evidence to refute the allegations, that would demonstrate that any such motion is misconceived, then the Government have the choice to present that evidence, reject the demand and abandon protocol on this occasion. Either way, there is nothing for Kemi Badenoch or others to lose by putting forward a motion.
Anyone who fails to do so without good reason, will not only be facilitating an ongoing failure, that will inevitably lead to further harm and death but possibly facilitating an even bigger cover up of the whole matter, ensuring that the protection of colleagues and Parliament comes before the responsibility of protecting the lives of millions of children and keeping them safe from harm.
In the event that the motion leads to a vote, the issue may be that the majority if not all of the 400 plus Labour MPs decide not to vote against a Labour Government. Unfortunately the public cannot force MPs to vote in a particular way and to do what they know to be right but what the public can do, is bring about transparency and accountability ensuring that ultimately, every MP will be answerable to their constituents for the decision they make going forwards.
What can the Public do to ensure the Government are held to account.
