Since 2017, MPs had been consistently informed, that failings in the school safeguarding systems were leading to an increase in bullying and violence, including the use of weapons and knives. MPs were warned that the rise in violence was likely to lead to an increase in knife attacks, not just within schools but the community and yet failed to act.
The Prevent review now evidences that those same failings, were likely a significant factor in the mobilisation of Axel Rudakubana towards violence, long before he was excluded from school and that had MPs not ignored them, Southport almost certainly would not have happened. Moreover, a recent terrorism review has evidenced that if MPs continue to ignore the failings, this will likely lead to future atrocities and terrorist attacks including school massacres.
MPs had had numerous warnings that something like Southport would happen and now the current government have had a number of warnings over recent months, that unless they act, similar atrocities will inevitably happen again. The Government response and that of the office of Keir Starmer, instead of taking any action to prevent such tragic events from occurring, has been to take a number of steps so that MPs can avoid any blame. Those steps include establishing a limited inquiry, that will allow a cover up of MPs failings, that evidently had led to the tragedy. With this in mind, it is not surprising that Keir Starmer’s promise to enact the Hillsborough Law by April 2025, which would have ensured that Government could be held criminally to account for any attempt to cover up failings in future inquiries, has now been broken.
At the very least, the Prime Minister’s failures demand his resignation. Combine this with the fact, that his government has continued to take numerous steps to avoid having to investigate the failings previously, knowing that they continue to result in harm, suicides and other deaths related to bullying and violence in schools and this is why Keir Starmer and his government must be held accountable and a no confidence vote and a general election must follow.
