Call to act to address safeguarding failings related to bullying, physical and sexual violence in UK schools.

Dear Jeremy Corbyn.

It has been brought to my attention that while in Central London recently, you were able to speak to Jason Barnett, the lead of the Safer Schools Campaign. As a result, you were made aware of a number of safeguarding failings related to bullying, physical and sexual violence in UK schools and the harm, suicides and deaths that have occurred as a consequence. I am now asking that you ensure that the issues he raised with you are now fully and independently investigated.

In line with the Campaign’s concerns, I am asking you to:

(1) Write to the Education Select Committee and request that they hold a one-off oral evidence session, into a number of safeguarding failings that the Safer Schools Campaign has raised. This can come under the already established and ongoing inquiry that the Committee is conducting into safeguarding failings in schools, which has been running since June 2021 https://committees.parliament.uk/work/1285/safeguarding-in-schools/. This will allow the Education Select Committee full access to evidence held by the Safer Schools Campaign, that demonstrates how children being harmed and lost to suicide or killed due to bullying, physical and sexual violence in schools, can in almost every case be avoided and the risks of harm and death significantly reduced.

(2) Write to the Prime Minister to request an independent investigation, into failings that the Safer Schools Campaign has brought to your attention, in relation to bullying, physical and sexual violence in UK schools. According to the Campaign, these are allegations that have been raised throughout numerous legal proceedings and through legitimate complaints and concerns raised with the Police, the EU Head of Human Rights and international Human Rights organisations including the UN. These are also allegations that to date, no one has ever addressed.

(3) Table an ‘Early Day Motion’, again requesting that the Prime Minister open an independent investigation, into failings that the Safer Schools Campaign has brought to your attention, in relation to bullying, physical and sexual violence in UK schools. This will allow other MPs to express their support for a full and transparent investigation and allow the public to ensure a certain level of accountability amongst all those in Parliament.

I would now greatly appreciate if you could ensure that these tasks are completed as a matter of urgency, so that ultimately lives can be saved.

Yours sincerely
